Picasso moved to Vallauris in 1948 and stayed until 1955. He married his last wife here at the Mairie which is now the public library. He came to learn about ceramics from the Madura family. His arrival brought a host of other artists and the artistic ceramics movement was born. The town had made its name with cooking/kitchen pottery. It was a return to Clement Massier who in 1889 had exhibited his artistic ware in Paris.
