Lavina Bartlett Navajo Raised Corn Jar
This raised corn jar pottery was made by Navajo Lavina Bartlett, and is an example of inpine pitchin pottery, which is a tradition form made by the Diné.
Bartlett makes her pottery by hand in the old style method, shaping the clay against a bowl and using a corn cob to rough up the seam and seal it. She then smooths the pot, allows to dry, then applies the corn design. The pot is painted and fired then pine pitch is applied. Liquid pitch is put inside and swirled around to coat the interior, and then use wax paper to apply it to the outside of the pot, giving it both a rich color--called inbrownwarein--and a high sheen.
