About the artist:
John W. Clarke, born in London, England, was the son of a Shakespearean actor and his artist wife. The family soon moved to Canada where he spent his youth. At the age of 19, he settled in Toledo, Ohio and worked as a locomotive engineer until about 1894 when he began to paint professionally. He was drawing and coloring pictures since that day. Mr. Clarke recalled an incident of his early days as an artist: inI painted a picture of a peach and entered it in a local exhibit. It took first prize. For four consecutive years after that I entered the picture in the annual exhibit and each time it took first prize. Finally the committee told me that if ever I entered that picture again they would throw it out. Pshaw, I told them, you're angry because you really can't put fuzz on a peach.in
Mr. Clarke and his daughter, Mrs. Hazel Clarke Witchner, who is also an artist, often painted landscapes together along the shores of Lake Erie at Lakeside, Walbridge Park and Marblehead, Ohio. He was also known for his many flower studies. In addition, he was proficient in the use of pastel, developing a technique, which he never disclosed, for protecting the surface and achieving a precision in detail not ordinarily seen in this medium.
Despite failing eyesight, the artist remained active in Toledo until two weeks before his death.
