Itzchak Tarkay (1935 - 2012) overcame an unspeakably dark time in history to emerge as an artist whose brightly painted work is full of delicate and beautiful women in various states of repose.
Tarkay was born at the Yugoslav - Hungarian border in 1935. During World War II, he and his family had the misfortune of being sent to Mathausen concentration camp by the Nazis when Tarkay was just nine years old.
In 1949 he and his family immigrated to Israel and by 1951 he had received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy. This study was interrupted for financial reasons and after a period of private study and a stint in the Israeli Army, Tarkay entered the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv and completed study in 1956.
Tarkay's art has universal appeal. After exhibiting both in Israel and abroad, he received recognition at the International Art Expo in New York in 1986 and 1987. Three hardcover books have been written on Tarkay. He is in numerous collections both public and private.
